Science for Health
Vivian Li received a B.Sc. (Hons) in Molecular Biotechnology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003. She then obtained her PhD at the University of Hong Kong in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (Department of Pathology) in 2008. Her PhD project was to identify novel genes and pathways involved in controlling human intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation. She received the Gold Medal Prize for her PhD thesis.
After completing her PhD study, Vivian was funded by the Croucher Foundation Fellowship to pursue post-doctoral research training with Hans Clevers at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research in the Netherlands in 2008. Her work focused on Wnt pathway proteomics and charactering intestinal stem cell genes using newly created transgenic mouse models. She has contributed to the identification of novel Wnt signalling mechanisms at different cellular levels (receptor, core destruction complex and transcription). During her postdoc studies, she has become familiar with reverse mouse genetics and the recently developed ex vivo organic crypt cultures.
Vivian is going to be an independent group leader at NIMR in February 2013. She will continue her research focus on Wnt pathway regulation from the dual perspectives of intestinal stem cell maintenance and colorectal cancer.
