Justin Molloy is a Royal Society University Research Fellow and group leader in the Division of Physical Biochemistry. In September 2003, he took over from Dr David Trentham as the new Head of Division of Physical Biochemistry.
He originally trained as a biologist working on the mechanical properties of insect flight muscle fibres from the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster. Over the past ten years he has moved from working with single muscle fibres, that produce micronewton forces to working with individual muscle molecules producing piconewton forces.
His research interests lie in making single molecule optical and mechanical studies of molecular motors in order to understand their basic mechanism of energy transduction. The single molecule approaches that his group uses can give unequivocal information about how such biomolecules work.
His research group at NIMR consists of biologists, biophysicists and physical chemists who are funded by the Medical Research Council. The team is also a component of the Oxford led IRC in Bionanotechnology. The group is grateful for significant past financial support provided by BBSRC, The Wellcome Trust and The Royal Society.
