Computing and telecomms

NIMR have dedicated computing and IT support staff on hand, with the central support team operating a help desk and providing services and advice to individual users.

The Institute runs a distributed computing system, based around a 100 Megabit/sec local area network with over 600 machines. This is linked to other international research facilities including the major protein and nucleic acid databases via a 100Mb JANET connection.

Services include network infrastructure, central computing services, desktop computer support, data storage and archiving, wireless networks, email, web servers and the internal phone system.

A wide variety of platforms is available, including Windows and Macintosh systems together with several variants of Unix. Some divisions operate their own specialised computing facilities.
