Biological Services
Biological Services provides a fully integrated laboratory animal and technical resource to the Institute. The multidisciplinary research at NIMR requires a range of species and models, and to meet those needs we operate and manage a number of complex animal facilities. These include:
- Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) breeding and experimental units
- Isolation/quarantine unit
- Containment facilities at levels 2, 3 and 4 for animals infected with organisms potentially harmful to man and/or the environment
- Specialist procedural, behavioural and surgical suites
- Imaging, irradiation and egg incubation facilities
- Extensive aquatic facilities
Other functions of Biological Services
- Veterinary and Microbiology Services
- Administration and licence control in compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986
- Co-ordination of Local Ethical Review Process
- Management of polyclonal antibody orders
- Support services
