Science for Health
NIMR has been at the forefront of international excellence in basic biomedical research for more than 80 years and our scientists, including students, have contributed to the prevention and improved treatment of many serious diseases and increased understanding of human health.
Over the years we have trained many research leaders and the training and support of students remains one of our key goals today. Each year we seek to attract high-calibre graduates who will benefit from our dynamic research and training programmes and experienced supervisors.
There are many reasons why NIMR is the ideal place to undertake your PhD. NIMR is a large multidisciplinary institute where a culture of cross-disciplinary interactions has been fostered. This has enabled a combination of techniques and approaches which would be difficult to achieve in many other places. The size and nature of the Institute also facilitates collaboration, both within and outside the Institute. To quote our former Director (John Skehel) talking to students:
"There are 15 research Divisions in the Institute. But Divisions is the wrong word. There are no barriers to talking or working with people. You can go into any lab..."
Our student programme equips you with all the skills and knowledge you will need to successfully complete your studies through an extensive range of seminars, workshops and lectures. We also provide excellent research support facilities and expertise so that you can concentrate on research.
Another important factor for PhD students is that supervisors are not distracted by heavy teaching loads, as there is no undergraduate teaching at the Institute. Students play an integral role in research and are immediately involved with the professional and social life of the Institute. The friendly, interactive and interdisciplinary nature of the Institute will ensure that you thrive and succeed
Finally, we think we're in the perfect location - pleasant, green surroundings and easy access to Central London, major London airports and motorways!
Did we forget to mention our excellent research support facilities and expertise? All on site, allowing you to focus on your research!
