Troy Margrie has been appointed Head of the Division of Neurophysiology.
Troy Margrie (pictured) joined NIMR as a Programme Leader in 2009, moving from the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology at UCL. His research uses a multi-disciplinary approach to explore how the brain integrates neuronal activities to encode a sensory stimulus. In 2009 Troy was given a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by the Humboldt Foundation, and won the Buckston Browne Prize of the Harveian Society. In 2011 he was given a Wellcome Trust New Investigator award for his programme of work on the function and connectivity of cortical cells and circuits.
I first learnt about NIMR when I was a graduate student in Australia, through reading several key studies carried out there on synaptic transmission and plasticity. Later, Tim Bliss collaborated with our lab and visited to carry out in vivo experiments. This exposure to whole animal electrophysiology seeded my long-standing interest in systems neuroscience.
I have found NIMR to be a very exciting, collegial and interdisciplinary environment. The open-door policy and generosity that permeates the Institute is apparent, from the students and postdocs through to Programme Leaders and the Directors and their support teams. There is genuine altruism and, most importantly, a sense that the science comes first.

I look forward to working with Troy as we develop our portfolio in neurophysiology, and I'm sure everyone will join with me in offering him our congratulations.
