The Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. Up to 25 awards are made annually to scientists and scholars of international renown who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements. Award winners are honoured for their outstanding research record and are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany. Troy will be undertaking a collaborative project with Peter Seeburg and Winifred Denk and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg in 2010.
Troy Margrie is acting head of NIMR's Division of Neurophysiology. His research aims to understand how the brain uses the activity of individual and collections of neurons to encode a sensory stimulus, exploring the issue from the systems to the cellular level.
