Science for Health
01 December 2010
Since 2003 NIMR has hosted an annual meeting for the North London region of the U3A, which has been enthusiastically attended by around 150 U3A members. Scientists from NIMR give talks which last around 30 minutes, and are followed by questions and discussion with U3A members.
The theme of the 2010 meeting is 'Understanding the heart in health and disease'. Heart disease is caused by a combination of mysterious genetic deficits, cumulative damage to the heart sustained during life activities and possibly the malign effects of the ageing process. At NIMR our strategy has been to explore the development of the heart using novel technology and to use this to improve our understanding of diseased hearts.
Tim Mohun will talk about identifying the cause of heart malfunctions, and clinician-scientist Ross Breckenridge will bridge the gap between the fundamentals of developmental biology and the reality of the clinic.
