John Wills awarded an MBE

03 January 2012

We are pleased to announce that John Wills has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List, for services to science.

John Wills (pictured), Assistant Director of NIMR, has worked at the Institute for over 40 years. He started as a Junior Technical Officer in the Division of Virology and via a series of promotions ended up a few years later as Principal Technician for the Division. In 1987 he became the Laboratory Manager for the whole Institute and in 1998 was made Assistant Director.

This award is richly deserved. John has worked at NIMR for more than four decades, under no fewer than six Directors: I can think of no one who has contributed more to the life and work of the Institute, or to its ethos or atmosphere. In addition to these efforts he is now working hard to ensure the future success of the Francis Crick Institute. John is a wonderful colleague and friend, and I join with the whole Institute in congratulating him on this great honour.

Jim Smith, NIMR Director
