John McCauley becomes Director of NIMR WHO Influenza Centre

John McCauley has taken over as Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, housed at NIMR. The previous WIC Director, Alan Hay, has retired.

John McCauley has become the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (also known as the WHO Influenza Centre). John joined NIMR's Division of Virology in 2007, after several years at the BBSRC Institute for Animal Health.

Alan Hay, the outgoing Director, joined NIMR's Division of Virology in 1971 as a member of scientific staff. In 1993 he became Director of NIMR's WHO Influenza Centre, retiring in October 2009. During his career at NIMR Alan published more than 200 research papers.

There are five WHO Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza, in Atlanta, USA; Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo, Japan and Memphis, USA. The WHO Influenza Centre at NIMR was the first to be established, in 1947.
