Mark Dillingham is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Bristol. He spent 2003-2004 working as a postdoc in Martin Webb's group in NIMR's Division of Physical Biochemistry before moving to Bristol.
Dr Dillingham receives the award for his work on helicase enzymes, proteins that unwind double-stranded DNA. His research has involved the development of elegant techniques that allow him to study the enzymes in operation on DNA in real time.
This award is well deserved: Mark has made a massive contribution at each laboratory in which he has worked.

The Colworth Medal is awarded annually for outstanding research by a young biochemist who has carried out the majority of his/her work in the UK. The medal was donated in 1963 by the Unilever Research Colworth Laboratory and is awarded to a scientist under the age of 35. It therefore recognizes the very best young biochemist working in the UK. The award of this medal to Dr Dillingham highlights the outstanding quality of his research and is richly deserved.
In 2000 the Colworth medal was awarded to Dario Alessi, a past NIMR PhD student. A number of earlier winners of the medal also had strong links with NIMR.
