A new tool for protein functional analysis

01 May 2012

Scientists at NIMR have designed a mutant that eliminates nucleic acid binding by K-homology (KH) domains without destabilizing the KH fold, changing its structure or affecting KH–protein interactions. The research is published in Nucleic Acids Research.

A drug target in the second most important cause of malaria

26 March 2012

A consortium of chemists, structural biologists and parasitologists has discovered a series of N-myristoyl transferase inhibitors and identified the features necessary for their novel mode of binding to the enzyme.  The work is published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

An important meiotic quality control mechanism is not conserved in birds

09 March 2012

Research published by NIMR scientists has traced the evolution of a mechanism thought to be important in the elimination of germ cells with defective chromosome pairing. The work is published in PLoS Genetics.

A missing link between DNA repair and cell-cycle regulation

15 February 2012

A recent paper by NIMR scientists and collaborators in Oxford has revealed new molecular links between DNA double-stranded break repair and the cell-cycle machinery through interplay between the Rad51 recombinase, the Mre11/Rad50/Nbs1 complex and two important but poorly understood protein kinases. The research is published in Molecular Cell.

Mammalian forebrain interneurons maintain plasticity

07 February 2012

Scientists at NIMR have shown that interneurons of the mammalian forebrain, and perhaps many other neurons in the mammalian brain, maintain remarkable phenotypic plasticity. The research is published in PNAS.

T cells provide protective interleukin 10 in malaria infection

31 January 2012

Scientists at NIMR have uncovered the source of a critical molecule that helps to control immune–mediated pathology in malaria. The research is published in The Journal of Immunology, and is featured in the “In This Issue” section, among the top 10% of articles published in the journal.
