Alex Gould wins the Hooke Medal

04 November 2010

Dr Alex Gould of the Division of Developmental Neurobiology has been awarded the 2011 Hooke Medal by the British Society for Cell Biology.

The medal is awarded annually to an emerging leader in cell biology. The medal is presented at the annual Spring meeting of the British Society for Cell Biology.

Alex Gould did his PhD at Cambridge University, in the laboratory of Rob White. Subsequently, he was a Beit and MRC postdoctoral fellow at NIMR with Robb Krumlauf before becoming a programme leader at NIMR in 1998. Working on Drosophila, Alex has made important contributions to the field of developmental physiology. In particular he and his group recently discovered and dissected the molecular mechanisms involved in regulating the timing of cell cycle exit in the Drosophila central nervous system. His work on lipid metabolism in Drosophila led to the demonstration that Drosophila oenocyte cells perform some functions equivalent to those of the mammalian liver. Alex was elected as an EMBO member in 2008.
