The origins of the MRC National Institute for Medical Research date back to 1914, as the first research institute established by the MRC. It was fully established at Hamsptead in 1920 and its first Director was Sir Henry Dale. The building at Hampstead became too small for the expanding needs of the Institute and in 1937 construction of a new building at Mill Hill began. Due to the outbreak of war in 1939 the building was not finally ready until 1949, and the move from Hampstead was completed in early 1950. An opening ceremony was performed on 5 May 1950 by H.M. King George VI, accompanied by H.M. the Queen.
As one way of marking the occasion, the MRC are holding their Council meeting at NIMR today.
