Postdoctoral Scientist

Functional characterization of DPAP3, an essential malarial protease involved in parasite egress and red blood cell invasion.

Division of Parasitology

Ref: IRC94670

A 4-year postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Edgar Deu’s group at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research. The lab is interested in the functional characterization of regulatory enzymes that are essential for the development of the malaria parasite. Our group combines chemical biology approaches with molecular biology methods to identify and study novel antimalarial targets. One of the enzymes we are currently studying is dipeptidyl aminopeptidase 3 (DPAP3), a cysteine protease playing an important regulatory role in parasite egress from infected red blood cells. The candidate will be involved in the expression and characterization of DPAP3, as well as in the development of DPAP3-specific activity-based probes and inhibitors. These chemical tools will then be combined with genetic and proteomic approaches to study the biological function of DPAP3 and to identify its natural substrates.

Qualified candidates will have a solid track record of research and academic achievement including publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Candidates will have a PhD (or near completion) with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Experience in chemical biology, parasitology, fluorescence microscopy, and/or proteomics are highly desirable but not essential. Highly motivated and qualified individuals who will be competitive in a leading biomedical area are encouraged to apply.

This is a 4 year fixed term externally funded CDF position. CDFs are training and development positions for postdoctoral scientists who have either recently completed their doctoral studies, are moving into a new research discipline, have limited previous experience of key transferable skills, or are clinically qualified with little or no research experience. They provide opportunities to develop research project skills and develop collaborative links with colleagues within the Institute and elsewhere.
