Postdoctoral scientist

Fluorescent biosensors: expanding range and uses

Division of Physical Biochemistry

Ref: IRC92690

We wish to identify an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist to be appointed as a Career Development Fellow and to work with a high degree of independence in the group of Martin Webb. The project is largely funded by Medical Research Council Technology. The project involves development of novel reagentless biosensors for key molecules and to develop and exploit assays, incorporating such biosensors for probing important biological processes. Such biosensors have an important role in basic research, such as measuring the production and fate of target molecules, and in drug discovery. Our aim is develop research tools that can be exploited within our own work and by the wider scientific community. The project will encompass generation of mutant proteins, which interact specifically with the target molecule and so act as the recognition element. These are linked to a fluorescent moiety that is the reporter element. For a previous example, see ACS Chem. Biol. 5, 415. The project will lead to biochemical and biophysical characterization of the fluorescent protein, particularly using rapid reaction techniques, and application to a biological system.

The successful candidate will have a relevant PhD or be in the final stages of completing their PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology or a related field. Knowledge of basic biochemical and biophysical techniques is essential, particularly experience working with proteins and basic molecular biology. Applicants should be able to learn quickly, have an interest in collaborative work, be able to communicate scientific ideas effectively. A high degree of enthusiasm to advance the project is essential for its successful outcome.

This is 2 years fixed term contract part - MRC part - externally funded.
