Animals at NIMR

Species of animals used

The vast majority of our animals are rodents, with large numbers of genetically altered lines of mice and rats. In addition our facilities house ferrets, rabbits, the laboratory opossum, zebrafish, Xenopus laevis and Xenopus tropicalis.

Source of animals

In order to produce reliable and useful results animals must be of a known health status. For this reason animals are only used which are bred at the Institute, or another approved breeding establishment (where fully documented breeding histories are known).
